Parrot's Feather
AZALEAS + RHODS

Rhododendron "Sappho"

Need to find the bloom time for this one.  It would go well and provide some contrast with the solid 'maroony' Rhod that blooms in June at the front.

Rhododendron "Nancy Evans"

LOVE this one!  Don't know where to put it yet but it's gotta go somewhere.  Maybe on the new garden by the back patio.  Bloom time is said to be early May & height in 10 years about 4 feet.  Needs well-drained soil.

Azalea "Buttons + Bows"

Rhododendron "White Blush"

Rhododendron "Old Copper"

Rhododendron "Papaya Punch"

Rhododendron "Hotei"

FOREST + WOODLANDS
GRASSES
Hakonechloa macra ‘Albo-Striata’
(Japanese Forest Grass )

Broad white-striped leaves spill over rocks and are superb by pathways. Performs best in partial shade with moist soil, and is quite happy between smaller Hostas or spilling out of containers on a shady patio.  Most sun-tolerant of all of the Hakonechloas.
Zone 6-9 / Partial Sun / Slow Growth

I'd like one of these below the deck area over to the right side.

Ophiopogon Japonicus -- Mondo Grass
Clumps of stemless dark green grass-like evergreen leaves make a beautiful small scale ground cover or low border. Tiny spikes of lilac flowers appear in summer. Very easy to grow. Full to partial sun. Moderate grower to 12 to 15 inches tall and wide. Division.
Care:  Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.
GROUND COVERS

Houttunyia Cordata *Chameleon*

Zones:

Sun Exposure:  Full to partial sun
Destination = Upper Row of Bed under Deck

REF 1: Monrovia

Appearance as a ground cover.

Potentilla *Arc En Ciel* Cinquefoil
New groundcover for shade is hot stuff. Striking rose-like double flowers are bronze red and rebloom continuously from June into fall. Dynamic color stands out against rich green foliage resembles that of strawberries. Clump forming plants spread and root vigorously for good coverage. Prefers well drained location. Perennial. Part shade. Rapid growth 1 foot tall and wide, spreading with time.

Light: Full to partial sun

Dwarf Lebanon Cedar

Euphorbia "Wolfeni"

Thinking this would look good with the Japanese Cypress in the new front bed with Hot Pink Geraniums & similar as annuals.

Cryptomeria Japonica
"Japanese Cedar"
The new growth comes in with this yellow-green color and looks really neat.
Can grow very large - 50' H and 20' Spread
Zone: 5 to 8
Light: Partial shade to full sun
Moisture: Wet to moist
Soil Type: Sandy, loam, or clay

Close up of foliage on the Cryptomeria

Hydrangea Macrophylla
"Glowing Embers"

Thinking this could work well beside the Camellia behind the garage.

Hydrangea Macrophylla
"Madame Emile Mouliere"

Embothrium coccineum

Can grow as high as 20' and is hardy to 10 degrees F.  Late spring / early summer bloomer.  Slow grower for first two years & hummingbird attractor.  Soil should be deep, loamy, not too rich + well-drained.  It doesn’t like animal manure.  Shelter from cold, drying winds. An outstanding specimen tree.  Likes Full Sun

Chilean Firebush Bloom  -- Closeup

Araucaria araucana
"Monkey Puzzle Tree"

Prefers well-drained volcanic soil, This species is surprisingly tolerant of many soil types. It is very tolerant of maritime exposures / salt-laden winds and thrives in cool mild climates. It dislikes hot-dry soils and atmospheric pollution.  Another Chilean origin tree it does well on the west coast though it is a slow grower.  In time it can reach 60 feet in height.

Choisya Ternata
"Mexican Orange"

Evergreen, Fragrant Blossoms in Spring, with 2nd bloom in summer if lightly trimmed after first bloom.  Reaches about 5' in height with a spread of equal plus.

Would like this for the front of the pond.

This might be interesting in the southwest corner in the front.

TROPICALESQUE

Kahili Ginger Tara

Echiumpininana

Is this neat or what?  :-)))

Dicksonia Antartica
( Hardy Tree Fern )

Might be neat in the garden across from rear patio.

Butia Capitata
( Jelly Palm )

From Brazil, one of the hardiest feather (as opposed to fan-) palms, Butia will withstand -10 degrees or -12 degrees C when larger.
Beautiful blue-green leaves strongly recurved make it instantly recognizable. An essential palm for the exotic garden. Tolerant of the weather in high rainfall regions. Ultimately it can grow to about 10 or 20 feet, though this will take some years. The fruit from this palm are used to make jelly hence the name jelly palm.

Alocasia Portodoro

Hybrid Upright Elephant Ears

A stunning upright clump that is essentially an improved A. macrorrhizos. Each giant green heavily scalloped leaf is held sturdily upright atop the thick muscular purple stalks. This is truly an architectural specimen plant for any garden. As with all elephant ears a moist rich organic soil is best. A good thick winter mulch helps prevent rot in cold wet soils.
Sun to Part Sun / Zone: 7b-10 / 96" tall

Washingtonia Robusta - Mexican Fan Palm

Tall slender trunk is topped with a crown of large fan-shaped evergreen fronds. Provides a very tropical appearance to the landscape. Excellent as a street tree or specimen. Full sun. Fast-growing to 50 to 60 feet high, 10- to 15-foot wide crown, larger with time.
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.  Fast Growing.  Once Established, needs only occasional water.

Fullsize image of Alocasia amazonica

Colocasia Amazonica
(also referred to as Frydek I believe)

Would doubt this would make a good outdoor plant in our climate but it would be a neat house plant.

VINES

Mitraria coccinea
"Little Bottles"

Another Chilean native, It needs a sheltered partial to bright shade location away from winter winds & especially protected from harsh sun of high summer as Mitraria is not terribly heat-hardy.  Seems to do well in our PNW 7-8 zones.

Ipomoea lobata

aka Mina Lobata
and Firecracker Vine

One plant easily produces several hundred stems of flowers in a spectacular color combination. Each 6" spike starts out crimson and gradually changes to yellow. Lush palmate leaves add to its attractiveness. A stunning, vigorous and easy to grow climber for a sunny or part sunny position.  Blooms late Summer to early Fall.  Grows 8 - 10'.  Seeds are poisonous if ingested.  Rich soil / Low Water  Annual in all zones.

Cestrum nocturnum

"Night Blooming Jasmine"

Can grow to 8-10'  - Sun to partial shade - will not overwinter outdoors here (Zone 7-8) - keep above 40 degrees - all parts of plant poinsonus - Average water - fragrant blossoms

Thunbergia Alata
"African Sunset"

Grows 6-8' - not hardy here so will need to bring into shed and keep above freezing - likes sun - Evergreen in correct zone.
Average Water Needs; Water regularly; do not overwater
